Have you ever wanted to go out for a drink but just wasn’t feeling the bar atmosphere? Did you feel like just playing some boards games or darts, or relaxing with friends under the warm, dancing light of multiple chandeliers, surrounded by original 1930s murals?

Me too. Grey Sail Tap Room is the place we have been looking for.
Serving a large selection of their own brews (made right next door) as well as locally made wine, a good-size selection of funky sour beers, and some bar snacks, the bright yellow house on Canal Street in downtown Westerly is extremely inviting. One could sit for hours enjoying the unique feeling of being at home in the casual yet elegant throw-back style of this historic house, which also has a large beer garden for warmer weather.
Right next door is the brewery which makes all the beer (available by the pint or in sample flights at the tap room.) The brewery is housed in what used to be the Westerly Macaroni Factory. The owners of the macaroni factory lived in the tap house. Grey Sail has been brewing in the former pasta factory for about five years, the beer makers obtained the house a couple years ago.
They left the décor of the 1930s beauty virtually untouched, and it’s a pleasure just to be able to relax and have fun in a setting that seems it would normally be reserved for walk-through tours. The tap house has a game room, with stacks of board games for the playing, and a darts room, as well as the bar room, with fifteen gleaming taps to choose from.
The brewery’s current customer favorite is the Captain’s Daughter IPA, a double IPA, which is higher in alcohol content and quite hoppy.
The tap room is available for events and often holds their own events- recent favorites being Oktoberfest and a Sour Night, for exploring the oft-overlooked “funky fermented” (as the tap house menu calls them) beers, which have a world of new tastes to learn and experience, not unlike that of wines.
Get out of your house and go to another one, an elegant and comfortable one where you might just run into new friends. This unique venue is definitely worth checking out.
